I realize that my approach is different from some breeders, but once there are shrimplets born into my colonies, I like to have some kind of food in the tank OFTEN. I'm not talking about a huge pile of food! I'm talking about a small amount of food, which I often do twice per day.
I believe that this is a very good approach, with one big caveat: You have to do it without messing up your water quality! One way would be to always have plenty of biofilm in your tanks, so that shrimp and their babies can find it everywhere. That is not always easy to accomplish. Another is to have decaying leaves scattered around the tank, as long as you don't overdo it. Sometimes that's not convenient.
Keep in mind that it is PROTEIN that leads to nitrogenous waste, leading to ammonia, then nitrite, etc. That's where foods such as this one and Shrimp Envy "Food Fight" come in handy. These foods create very little ammonia, and if your filter is mature, it can surely handle that small amount of ammonia. So I use foods like these to great advantage, especially when I suspect that there might not be enough biofilm in the tank.
